MRL Shared Experimental Facilities

The below information applies to facilities under the management of the MRL:
TEMPO
X-RAY DIFFRACTION
SPECTROSCOPY
COMPUTING
ENERGY
POLYMER SYNTHESIS FACILITIES

For access to MICROSCOPY AND MICROANALYSIS or the TERAHERTZ FACILITY, please contact the Technical Directors directly.

For General Inquiries, please contact the Facility Manager for the instruments you wish to use.

A. When experiments are to be performed by UCSB recharge staff:

  1. Contact the Facility Manager(s) to assist you in making arrangements.
  2. Complete the Request for Billing Account (requires company/institution authorized signature).

sylvia [at] mrl [dot] ucsb [dot] edu
  4. Any work performed by the facilities staff must be explicitly outlined at the time the work order is requested. This includes any reporting of analytical or statistical data. Additional fees will be charged for new or modified requests for any data/reports which require additional time or re-running samples to produce.
  5. Once all documents are approved, users will be connected with the appropriate Facility Manager to schedule sample analysis.

B. When non-UC employees will perform experiments:

  1. Contact the Facility Manager(s) of the instruments you wish to use.
  2. Complete the Request for Billing Account (requires company/institution authorized signature).
  3. Return the above document above to:
    Sylvia Vogel
sylvia [at] mrl [dot] ucsb [dot] edu
  4. Contact Sylvia Vogel, sylvia [at] mrl [dot] ucsb [dot] edu, to complete other required forms and certifications for use of UCSB Multi-use facilities.
  5. Once all documents are approved, users will be connected with the appropriate Facility Manager for Instrument Training and Lab Access.
  6. In order to access the labs, external users will need to obtain a UCSBnetID and take the LS60 online safety training course through the Learning Center.

Costs:

  • $100 Training fee for each external user attending training classes (for-profit institutions)
  • Individual training will be billed at the off-campus hourly rate of the trainer.
  • Recharge rates for instruments can be found here: http://mrlweb.mrl.ucsb.edu/recharge-rates

Most MRL-affiliated facilities use web-based sign-up for instrument access. All users, internal and external, receive the same priority in these systems. If a case arises in which significantly heavy scheduling by an external user conflicts with student research access, individual arrangements may be required to ensure that student users have adequate access to instrumentation in accordance with the the primary educational missions of the University.
