Proposals – Negotiating – Supervision – Interviews – Research Directions – Publishing – Application Process: This 2 day workshop will seek to provide mentorship to aspiring underrepresented minority students with ambitions to become independent academic researchers in the broad areas of Chemistry, Chemical Engineering and Materials Science. The workshop will be held at the University of California, Santa Barbara from the evening of Sunday July 15 to Tuesday evening July 17, 2012. Eminent professors from around the country will be in attendance to provide mentoring and the goal is to maintain a student/faculty ratio that is less than 4:1. This is the 5th workshop in this series and the previous workshops were held at MIT (2008, 2011), Carnegie Mellon University (2009), and the University of Massachusetts Amherst (2010).
Application Procedure:
Students from Chemistry, Chemical Engineering, Polymer Science, Materials Science and related departments are encouraged to apply. Applications should be e-mailed to hawker [at] mrl [dot] ucsb [dot] edu and should include: The Student’s resume (PDF), a short personal statement (including research interests and career goals), and faculty references (telephone and e-mail). The students should also arrange for one or more faculty members to send brief reference letters to hawker [at] mrl [dot] ucsb [dot] edu. The workshop attendance will be limited to 20-25 students. Reasonable travel costs will be covered. Final selection of participants will be made by June 29, 2012. Early submissions are welcome as applications may be accepted before the deadline date.
