Photovoltaics are the most promising renewable energy technology due to the enormous amount of energy that reaches the earth in the form of solar radiation. In this presentation I will examine the defect properties of several emerging photovoltaic absorbers. I will show how understanding these properties allows for the design of more efficient materials that do not suffer the same performance limitations. Finally, I will discuss how the defect chemistry can be used to predict trap-assisted recombination rates under different growth conditions.
